主啊！求祢賜給我一個兒子，-------------Build me a son, O Lord,
有足夠的堅毅，明瞭自己的軟弱； ------who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
有足夠的勇敢，面對畏懼；----------------and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;
在失敗中保持誠信，毫不氣餒； ---------one who will be proud and unbending in honest de-feat,
在勝利中保持謙遜及溫純。----------------and humble and gentle in victory.
賜給我一個兒子，----------------------------Build me a son
不至空有幻想而缺乏行動；----------------whose wishes will not take the place of deeds;
引導他認識祢，同時又知道，-------------a son who will know Thee…… and that
認識自己乃是知識的基石。----------------to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge
我祈求，----------------------------------------Lead him, I pray,
願祢引導他不求安逸、舒適，-------------not in the path of ease and comfort,
相反的，讓他在壓迫、艱難和挑戰中，-but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
學習可以在風暴中挺身站立，-------------Here, let him learn to stand up in the storm;
學會憐恤那些在失敗的人。----------------here let him learn compassion for those that fail.
求祢賜給我一個兒子，----------------------Build me a son
心地清明，-------------------------------------whose heart will be clear,
目標遠大；-------------------------------------whose goal will be high,
使他在導引別人之前，----------------------a son who will master himself
先懂得駕馭自己；----------------------------before he seeks to master other men;
永不忘記過去的教訓，----------------------one who will reach into the future,
為未來的理想奮發。-------------------------yet never forget the past.
當他擁有以上的一切，----------------------And after all these things are his,
我還向祢祈求，賜他有足夠的幽默感，-add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,
讓他能認真嚴謹，----------------------------so that he may always be serious,
卻不致過分苛求自己。----------------------yet never take himself too seriously.
懇求賜他謙卑，-------------------------------Give him humility,
使他永遠牢記，-------------------------------so that he may always remember
唯有平凡中才能顯示出偉大，-------------the simplicity of true greatness,
唯有開明包容才能得到智慧，-------------the open mind of true wisdom

以上是前美國五星上將道格拉斯．麥克亞瑟，於第二次世界大戰的太平洋戰爭之初（1937年）所寫的，他通過對上主的敬仰，表達出一位父親對兒子的殷切期許。

對於母親，就算與兒女的面容有了許多歲月的痕跡，我們可以在任何時候撒嬌，黏在母親的懷抱中。但是對於父親，不期然的就會讓人感覺會有點距離，有些遠。

年初到國內旅行，想參加主日彌撒又擔心會睡過頭，前一晚與父親閒聊的時候提了一下，沒有放在心上也沒有任何的期許。主日早上收到父親打了來的叫起電話，然後爸爸在零下3度的凌晨，寒風砭骨中全程陪伴我到聖堂望彌撒。父親沒有用亮麗的話語，只是用心記下了我的需要，爸爸並非是教徒，他的陪伴讓我感到幸福，非常感動。謝謝您，爸爸。

耶肋米亞第三十二章40節

與他們訂立一永久的盟約，再不離棄他們，為他們謀幸福，將敬畏我之情賦於他們心內，使他們不再離開；

格林多後書第一章4節

是祂在我們的各種磨難中，常安慰我們，為使我們能以自己由天主所親受的安慰，去安慰那些在各種困難中的人。

此兩段，我們可以更加了解到父親對子女的愛，會成為一個盟約，父親不會要求子女的回饋及提出任何的交換條件；父親永遠都有如大山鼎立在子女的背後，不是干預，而是不會離棄，在子女的磨難中提供安慰。

作為父親，不能將孩子永遠呵護在手中，縱容他們逃避磨難，要忍心地讓他們大膽的接受挑戰， 在痛苦中茁壯，成長，疾風才能知勁草。
